| Umm Al-Qanatir |

Umm al-Qanatir is located in the south-western part of the Golan Heights and is undoubtedly
one of the most beautiful and most magnificent ancient synagogues uncovered in the country. It
was first discovered in 1884, by the British diplomat and writer Sir Laurence
Olifant.
Only 120 years later, by the end of the year 2003, the explorers became aware
of the great size and splendor and exclusivity of this synagogue.
Its climax is the hall of the Holy Ark, preserved almost entirely, the ceiling
rising up to 5.5 m.
Up to this day it was difficult to prove the existence of big, magnificent Holy
Arks in the ancient synagogues. The discovery at Umm al-Qanatir substantiated
the assumption that such Arks actually did exist in ancient synagogues.
