Mazraat Kanaf

Mazraat KanafAn ancient Jewish village, close to the "moshav" Kanaf, on the Golan Heights. On site, remains from the Canaanite, Persian and Hellenistic eras were found, and an early synagogue, probably from the 5th century, was uncovered. In the year 1885, Sir Lawrence Olifant discovered the site, while on a survey tour in the neighborhood. In 1978, excavations were made on the synagogue site and the following inscription (in Hebrew) was found on the crossbar of the synagogue entry gate (translation):
"This bar was made by Yossey, blessed be his name, son of Halfu, son of Honyo"
Likewise, a relief has been found, which ornamented the front of the building or the
Holy Ark, and two capitals (pillar crowns), on one of which a 3 shaft candelabrum (menorah) is engraved.
